About SOC

Soutwest Opportunities Center, Inc. is a private, non-profit agency, dedicated to providing employment and day services programming to adult residents of Grant County who have a disability.

S.O.C. began operating in December of 1988. The Center is governed by a Board of Directors made up of citizens of Grant County. Income is earned from pen and button sales, document shredding, contracted janitorial services and sub-contract work. Funding is also provided through a contract with the Unified Board of Grant and Iowa Counties, and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Other funds are provided through private donations, United Way, and fund raising events.

S.O.C. began as a county owned and operated facility known as Twin Platte Center, located west of Platteville. In 1989 the Twin Platte Center changed its name to Southwest Opportunities Center and was incorporated as a private non-profit agency. In 1995 the Center moved to its current location in Lancaster's Industrial Park. In the Fall of 2000, a 5,600 sqaure foot addition was added on to our original production floor.

Our purpose is to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to grow in work, living, and leisure skills. The objective is to assist each individual to reach his or her full potential and highest level of independence. SOC provides programs and services for individuals with a wide range of disabilities including cognitive, developmental, physical/orthopedic, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and many other disabilities.
